Rules

In order to participate in experiments at the Newcastle Experimental and Behavioural Economics Lab, you must register in our database using the lab's online recruitment system. Part of this registration process involves acknowledging the following basic rules of conduct:

  • You can only register once in the ORSEE database. Registering multiple accounts undermines our scientific research. Any participant found with more than one profile will be excluded from all future studies.
  • Only current students and staff at Newcastle University are eligible to participate in our experiments. You must bring your unexpired University ID card to each session, so that our researchers can verify your status.
  • A certain number of registered persons will receive an invitation email to each experiment. The exact number is determined by the researcher conducting that experiment. Only the invited persons may take part in that experiment.
  • If you receive an invitation email, you must respond affirmatively in order to participate. Spaces in an experiment are limited, so it is important to respond early to better ensure that a space will still be available. Important Note: Once you respond affirmatively, you cannot later withdraw this response from the recruitment system, so please verify that you are actually able to come before you respond.
  • Usually, some extra persons are invited to ensure that a minimum participation level is achieved. Alternates will receive compensation for arriving for the experiment on time. The exact amount of this payment is determined by the researcher conducting that particular experiment, and will be described in the invitation email.
  • Participants will usually be compensated based on the decisions they make during the experiment. The exact amount of this payment is determined by the researcher conducting that particular experiment, and will be described in the invitation email.
  • Important Note: After the scheduled start time, anyone who responded affirmatively to an invitation but did not show up will not receive any compensation for that experiment. In addition, he or she will be charged with a "no-show penalty." After a person receives 3 no-show penalties, he or she will be permanently removed from the database, and will be ineligible for any further experiments.
  • During an experiment, Participants must follow the directives of the researchers. The researchers will identify themselves before the commencement of the experiment.

About the information you give us

When you register with our participant database, we request a few personal details. We require first and last name, gender and (where applicable) course of studies and expected completion date of studies. We also require a university email address. We need this information in order to identify you positively when you participate in a session, and to ensure that no one is registered more than one time in our system.

In addition, we request some optional data. You are free to provide some, all, or none of this information, although the more information you choose to provide, the more experiments you will likely be eligible for.

We only use the information you provide to our online database for the purpose of inviting you to experiments conducted by, or explicitly approved by, the Newcastle Experimental and Behavioural Economics Lab. We do not pass your information on to any other party, unless required to by law, and it will be stored securely on Newcastle University servers.

In our participant database, we will keep records of the following information only: your registration information, which experiments you received invitations for, for which sessions you registered, and whether or not you showed up. Records will be retained only for as long as necessary for the purpose it is collected. Any further information you give in an experiment will be held separately and we will seek your consent for every experiment that you choose to attend.

Your decision to participate or not to participate in our experiments will have no effect on your academic standing, employment, or other matters with Newcastle University.

You can unsubscribe from our register at any time using the unsubscribe button on your account profile. If you do that we will not contact you again. However, if you change your mind in the future, please register again with the same email address and your participation history will be recovered. In addition, every year we will review our database and remove participants who have not registered for an experiment for more than two years from the active database.

If you would like to discuss the use of your personal data further, please contact the lab lead at orsee.experiments@newcastle.ac.uk.

If you wish to raise a complaint on how we have handled your personal data, you can contact our Data Protection Officer who will investigate the matter. If you are not satisfied with our response or believe we are processing your personal data in a way that is not lawful, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)

Our Data Protection Officer is Maureen Wilkinson and you can contact them at rec-man@ncl.ac.uk.

About participating in sessions

We hope our experiment sessions are in general fun and stimulating. We have just a few procedures we follow in order that our sessions run smoothly.

Signing up for a session represents a commitment on your part that you intend to be there. If circumstances change and you are not able to attend a session you signed up for, please notify us immediately at orsee.experiments@newcastle.ac.uk so that we can offer your place to another participant. Failure to show up for a session may result in its cancellation, inconveniencing your fellow participants; please be considerate!

Sessions begin promptly at the announced time. We will usually invite more people than needed just to deal with the case where people withdraw at the last minute. If you arrive on time and are not needed in the experiment, we will pay you a turn-way fee. Once a session has begun, it is not possible to join it in progress, and we will be unable to offer you a turn-away fee.

At the end of an experiment you may be asked to complete a receipt for any money that you are paid. This receipt will include the date of the experiment, your name, signature and amount paid. We pass these on to the University finance department who retain them as proof of payment.

We promise to treat you in a polite, courteous, and professional manner when you come to our lab. We request that you do the same both to lab personnel, and to other participants in your session.

No eating or drinking is permitted in our lab at any time.

The use of mobile phones or other electronic devices is not permitted while in the lab, unless you are explicitly directed that you may do so by your experimenter.

Directions

Unless otherwise specified, experiments will take place at the Newcastle University Business School (5 Barrack Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4SE). The Experimental and Behavioural Economics Lab is located on the second floor (NUBS 2.01).
